Some of the greatest friendships are based on the love for food; such is the case of Luz Carime Bersh.
Around five years ago, Bersh started putting out hazelnuts and peanuts to squirrels of the neighborhood that frequented the courtyard on her house in Florida. Days later, one of the squirrels from the group peeked into the house, demanding more peanuts, perhaps.
That marked the beginning of their cute little friendship. Bersh named the squirrel Grisnelda and the latter began showing up every day.
Bersh said that Grisnelda’s visits were intensified as weeks passed by. The squirrel just peeked her head in through the window, in an attempt to say “hey I am here, feed me”. And feed her she did.
Bersh and Grisnelda began spending a lot of time together. The time spent usually involved outdoors and courtyards, while other times they’d even meet at the woman’s balcony. Until one time, the squirrel decided to make a step forward and come into the house!
Bersh said one time the squirrel just came in and sat on the woman’s knee. From then on, it would make frequent appearances; walk through the dining hall, as if in a hunt for food. Just as if she was inviting herself over for breakfast.
Unlike most of the squirrels who are known for their wild nature, Grisnelda was domesticated in a short amount of time. She would eat lunch with Bersh, with the latter eating a sandwich and the former relying on her nuts diet.
Sometimes, Bersh said that the squirrel would even take food home. This was especially the case when she had babies. Bersh claims that Grisnelda had at least 4 litters.
After two years of friendship, Bersh found out that she needed to move away to Georgia for an amount of time. Because of her special relationship with Grisnelda, Bersh was heartbroken to hear the news.
She said that she had become so emotionally attached to the squirrel that she actually contemplated whether she should take her along. Then Bersh said she realized Grisnelda belonged in the wild and she would never want to jeopardize her freedom. So, she had to say goodbye, prepared to never see her again.
For seven months, Bersh was relocated to Georgia, while her boyfriend who was still in Florida looked after the squirrel from time to time. Seven months later, upon her return, it was as if nothing had changed.
In November 2016, Bersh was braced with another loss; she lost her dog, Rosie Pink, after having had her for 16 full years. She went outside to clear her head of the tragedy and that is when she spotted Grisnelda looking down at her.
Bersh said that she had told Grisnelda that Rosie Pink had died and she was heartbroken before proceeding to go by the lake and clear her head. Bersh claims that Grisnelda joined her and wasn’t hungry at all. She stayed with her friend for 15 good minutes before falling asleep. She told her it’s okay if you want to go to bed. So they parted ways for the night.
The next day, she showed up on Bersh’s porch again, and this time too she wasn’t hungry. She just sat there with her friend, with eyes that said “I understand you, and I am here for you”. It was like she had no interest out of Bersh but just wanted to let her know that she will be with her during this hard time.
Even in 2019, the pair are still good friends. Grisnelda has even introduced Bersh to her new letter of babies. So much has indeed changed over the years but their friendship has withstood the hardness of time.
Bersh says that she is very excited to have Grisnelda in her life as it fills her day with joy and she can’t wait to meet the little friend.
