Mike Flanagan decided to bring home a Rottweiler puppy one of these days but it wasn’t the best decision for everyone it seems- his mother-in-law, Peggy Allen didn’t seem to be all too pleased about it.
Mike claims that she likes dogs but given she is 80 years old and pretty small herself, giant dogs always pose the risks of knocking them over, Flanagan said. Allen, or otherwise known as Grammy also let her feelings be known to everyone when Mike came home with a huge dog. She said well she has to admit that she has always been a fan of lapdogs herself.
Flanagan was still optimistic however that there will be some bonding between Grammy and the dog. Judging by Grammy’s first visit after the dog joined the family, turns out Flanagan’s instincts were straight on point!
He says that Grammy likes her peace and her space so at first sight he figured she and Gus, the dog wouldn’t be the best of buddies. However, Grammy taught Gus quickly enough what he was and wasn’t allowed to do, and how he could jump on her WHEN and only when she allowed him to.
After months, Grammy visited again but things had changed slightly. The once-petite puppy grew into a 9-month-old baby weighing almost a whooping of 100 pounds!
Grammy’s life had been difficult in the past few months especially after the loss of her husband. Gus had no idea of knowing that Grammy was visiting to attend a memorial service. After all he is a dog, so how could he know such stuff? He knew however that she needed something. And the dog decided to offer her whatever it was that she needed.
Flanagan said that Gus didn’t leave her side for the whole visit. He even slept by her bed and waited for her by the bathroom door. When she would leave and come back, he’d let out an “AROOOOO” of happiness upon seeing Grammy return.
And this is for sure not a clingy behavior on Gus’ side as he has much attention from everyone as is. Grammy even acknowledges the fact that the two have a “thing” now. Who would have thought?
Even though Gus and Grammy have this special bond, Gus’ love doesn’t discriminate against anyone, hence his nickname “Certified Loverbutt”. Flanagan states that he and his wife are a very outdoorsy family who love to take hiking trips into the Catskills or staying local at different picnics and trips to the pond. So Gus’ amazing and friendly personality has been an amazing fit for the family, Flanagan states.
The dog clearly has a special relationship with each family member, just like we saw with the example of him and Grammy and how he was able to tune his behavior in accordance with exactly what Grammy needed. Flanagan states that Gus is a playmate to his sons and a cuddler with his daughter. He even attends to his wife’s anxiety and she feels safer in the house with Gus there. Flanagan adds that having him in the family has provided them all with unconditional and constant happiness.
It is needless to say at this point that Gus has his family’s approval as a great dog, especially Grammy’s. Flanagan adds that whenever Gus and Grammy are together now, they are simply inseparable and best buddies.
