The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning I regards to medications used to treat flea and tick for the animals. The medication uses a pesticide called isoxazoline a product that is associated with neurological adverse reactions for the animals.
It is important for the owners to treat their pets when they have tick and fleas however, the FDA wants all of owners to make sure they pay attention to the warning signs for these products. The pesticide isooxazoline can be found in products such as: Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica and others Credelio all products that are FDA approved but they come with the warning in this regard and should be used under this caution.
The FDA in the alert notify:
“Isoxazoline products have been associated with neurological adverse reactions, including muscle tremors, ataxia and seizures in some dogs and cats.”
It is a fact that every medication that we use for humans or animals comes with side effects, however, for some medications these side effects are to be taken serious and some are just bearable. For the FDA it is important that people/ owners read with caution all the sides effects because sometimes these side effects can be more dangerous than the disease the meds are treating.
For the meds treating fleas and ticks some of the side effects include; loss of control for the muscles, thus making animals stumble and appear clumsy or even twitch and can even go to causing seizures for the animals. As such, it is important for the owners to be aware of the risks they are taking when treating their animals with such medication and know that they have other alternatives, for example , this case topical flea and tick medication and collars.
Another concern that the FDA and veterinarians are posing is the fact that owners/people are fed up with commercials/ advertisement that take 5 minutes to list all of the side-effects. When these ads are own a lot of people just phase out and change the channel. But the FDA says that it is important for the owners to be aware so it does not come to a bad outcome.
Another quote from FDA in this regard says:
“ The agency is asking the manufacturers to make the changes to the product labeling in order to provide veterinarians and pet owners with the information they need to make treatment decisions for each pet on an individual basis.”
Therefore, it is very important for owners to me cautions and do the right research before they decide to give their pets medications, if otherwise they will be disappointed and the side effects can cause worst outcomes. Look for all the options, at the end it is our duty to take care of our pets.
